Hollywood questioned for years whether YouTube fame could succeed at the box office. Recently, the answer has become clearly affirmative.
Film Success from YouTube Origins
The psychological horror film ‘Backrooms,’ directed by 20-year-old Kane Parsons, was released by A24 in 3,400 theaters across the United States and Canada. Parsons, a first-time filmmaker, gained popularity with YouTube videos that amassed 342 million views. Box office analysts predict ‘Backrooms’ will earn at least $60 million by Sunday.
For comparison, Steven Spielberg’s upcoming film ‘Disclosure Day,’ set to open in two weeks, is expected to generate around $35 million. A24’s investment in ‘Backrooms’ was approximately $10 million, featuring stars such as Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve. Meanwhile, Universal Pictures spent an estimated $115 million on ‘Disclosure Day,’ featuring Emily Blunt.
Emerging Trend of Online Creators
‘Backrooms’ represents a trend of films by directors who gained experience on YouTube. Notably, Curry Barker and Mark Fischbach, with no prior Hollywood experience, have also turned their online audiences into unexpected box office successes.
“It’s the start of a gigantic shift,” said Stephen Galloway, dean of Chapman University’s film school. He calls these creators “the cinematic insurgents of our era.”
‘Obsession,’ directed by Curry Barker, known for comedy and horror content, illustrates this change. The film grossed $74 million in North America over two weeks. This comedy-horror-thriller cost $750,000 to produce and features no notable stars. Analysts predict it could earn $100 million before the end of its run.
This wave of new filmmakers from YouTube backgrounds signals a significant shift in the film industry, highlighting the growing influence of digital platforms in the cinematic world.
