The United States has temporarily lifted oil sanctions against Iran. This marks a shift in American policy. The change aims to provide Iran with economic relief after years of selling oil at reduced prices to avoid U.S. sanctions.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a 60-day exemption on sanctions. This permits the purchase of Iranian oil in U.S. dollars, enhancing Iran’s access to American currency. These decisions follow productive discussions with Iran in Bürgenstock, Switzerland.
Vice President JD Vance, the leader of the U.S. team in Bürgenstock, stated that Iran agreed to allow United Nations inspectors into its nuclear sites. He sees this as a significant milestone for America and a step toward ending Iran’s nuclear weapons program. President Trump echoed these sentiments on social media.
However, clarity is lacking on whether inspectors will visit Iran. The U.N. nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, made no immediate comments. A spokesman for Iran’s foreign ministry, Esmail Baghaei, mentioned that there were no new commitments regarding nuclear inspections and that any engagement would follow existing procedures.
At a Bürgenstock press conference, JD Vance discussed new communication channels aimed at easing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and in Lebanon. Here, hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed group, have decreased. These issues have added complexity to the U.S.-Iran cease-fire negotiations.
