Cuban Reaction to U.S. Indictment of Raúl Castro
As news spread of the U.S. indictment against Raúl Castro for murder, many Cubans remained unaware due to the country’s communication challenges. The indictment accuses the former Cuban president of murder and conspiracy related to the 1996 downing of two planes, which resulted in the deaths of four individuals, three of whom were Americans.
Communication issues on the island, including blackouts and weak phone signals, delayed the news’ arrival to the residents. This added to the difficulties faced by Cubans who are already enduring hardships due to American sanctions and a repressive government.
Yoandy Benítez Ramirez, a 24-year-old factory worker in Havana, expressed a widespread sentiment among Cubans: “This has to change.” Blackouts, shortages, and a health crisis intensify their struggles. The situation worsened after the U.S. reduced Cuba’s oil supplies, increasing the desire for changes that could improve living conditions.
While some Cubans were able to follow updates through U.S. television, the divide over the legitimacy of the charges remained. Ultimately, the hope for developments to alleviate their plight continues to unite many in Cuba.
