Americans More Worried Than Excited About AI’s Role
Americans express more concern than excitement about artificial intelligence’s impact on society, as revealed by a recent survey. The “Americans on AI” poll by Athena Insights showed that most Americans have strong opinions on AI, despite varying levels of direct experience with the technology. The survey results indicate that 28% of respondents are “very concerned,” and 37% are “somewhat concerned.” Meanwhile, only 6% are “very excited,” and 18% are “somewhat excited.”
The results reflect similar sentiments across different political affiliations, even though Democrats and Republicans in Washington disagree on handling AI-related issues. Colin Hyatt Bortner, research lead for Athena Insights, emphasized that the survey is designed to capture changes in public opinion over time, not as a standalone snapshot. Bortner noted, “We developed a neutral instrument to capture data on AI’s impact on people, whether positive or negative, which can guide policy responses.”
The survey will be conducted every two weeks to track ongoing shifts in public perception. It explores whether AI might facilitate advances in medicine and science or improve healthcare.
