President Donald Trump has targeted Texas Senator John Cornyn, branding him as “disloyal” while supporting Attorney General Ken Paxton in the heated GOP Senate runoff. Trump’s endorsement highlights his influence within the Republican Party and showcases his impact on GOP nomination contests.
The winner of this runoff will compete against Democratic candidate James Talarico in an election that could determine Republican control of the Senate. Talarico, who defeated Jasmine Crockett in the primary, aims to become the first Democrat in nearly four decades to win a Senate seat in Texas.
Runoff Elections and Political Endorsements
The Texas ballot includes both Democratic and Republican runoffs for the Attorney General position and key primary battles for four U.S. House seats. Trump’s endorsement of Paxton came just before the runoff, with Trump criticizing Cornyn’s lack of support during challenging times. Cornyn has defended his record, highlighting his past cooperation with Trump.
Paxton, who has gained national attention by challenging Democratic administrations, has faced scandals and legal issues over the past decade. His impeachment in 2023 by the Texas House was followed by an acquittal in the state senate. Cornyn warns that if Paxton becomes the nominee, significant Democratic funds could challenge his candidacy, impacting down-ballot Republicans.
Other Texas Political Showdowns
Besides the Senate race, the Texas Republican runoff for Attorney General is noteworthy, with Rep. Chip Roy facing state Sen. Mayes Middleton. Roy emphasizes his extensive courtroom experience, casting doubts on Middleton’s qualifications. Middleton self-funds his campaign significantly, questioning Roy’s conservative credentials.
In the 35th Congressional District, Democratic runoffs sparked controversy. Housing activist Maureen Galindo proposed converting an ICE detention center into a prison for American Zionists, which drew backlash and support for her moderate opponent, Johnny Garcia. The outcome of these runoffs will shape future electoral contests.
Additionally, in the solidly Democratic 18th Congressional District, Rep. Al Green faces Christian Menefee. In the predominantly Democratic 33rd and 9th Districts, politicians with strong endorsements vie for nominations, making these runoffs consequential in outlining political landscapes.
