Instagram Suspension Impacts ‘No Kings’ Coalition During Key Early Voting Events

Instagram Account Suspension

Leaders of the ‘No Kings’ coalition reported that their main Instagram account was suspended for approximately 90 minutes on Saturday, coinciding with nearly 3,000 events taking place nationwide. These events were part of the group’s initiative to encourage early voting ahead of the November midterms. Despite the page becoming public again, organizers stated they were unable to access the account’s backend for around four hours, hindering their ability to post or communicate with their network.

A representative from ‘No Kings’ expressed concern about the suspension, noting the impact on their movement during a critical time of mobilization. In a statement to Newsweek, the representative emphasized that the inability to utilize their platform disrupted their efforts to engage communities actively.

This suspension deprived the movement of a crucial platform right as communities were joyfully and nonviolently mobilizing, the representative said.

The coalition labeled the suspension as ‘unjustified.’

Meta’s Response

Meta, the parent company of Instagram, clarified that access was disabled due to an automated action error. Andy Stone, a Meta spokesperson, explained on X that high-frequency posting activity triggered the platform’s automated systems.

Stone stated that the automation mistakenly affected the ‘No Kings’ Instagram account in anticipation of the day’s events. Meta apologized for the erroneous suspension and confirmed that the account’s functionalities were restored.

Everything is now working as it should, and we sincerely apologize, Stone wrote.

The ‘No Kings’ Movement

The ‘No Kings’ coalition is a nationwide protest and organizing movement opposing former President Trump’s return to the White House in 2025. Following his re-election, organizers became concerned about what they viewed as his exercise of power that contradicted the United States’ founding principles. The coalition’s initial protests coincided with the president’s military parade on June 14, 2025, marking the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary.

Protestors displayed signs criticizing various Trump administration policies, such as mass deportations, and featured imagery of crowns crossed out. Although the messaging primarily focused on Trump, the group behind ‘No Kings,’ known as Indivisible, emphasized that their central message advocates for political power remaining with the people.

Political power should reside with the people, rather than leaders in Washington, D.C., insisted the group.

Nationwide ‘No Kings’ Events

Organizers conveyed to Newsweek that despite not having a precise nationwide crowd estimate, nearly 3,000 ‘No Kings: Vote Early’ events were occurring across all 50 states and Washington, D.C. The coalition described the events as efforts to promote nonpartisan voter participation, urging eligible voters to formulate voting plans and cast ballots early for the November 3rd midterms.

Event activities included rallies, marches, distribution of voting information, and organized trips to polling locations. Demonstrators assembled near the Lincoln Memorial, showcasing signs such as ‘VOTE EARLY’ and ‘HANDS OFF MY VOTE!’ Reports indicated several hundred attendees gathered in Washington, D.C.

In Atlanta, City Council member Michael Julian Bond encouraged participants to leverage their democratic power to vote. Bond emphasized that voting is a constitutional power, prompting individuals to use it and visit polling stations.

Your vote belongs to you, Teresa Cox of the Texas Organizing Project informed Dallas demonstrators, stressing independent decision-making during voting.

Political Responses and Meta Relations

Senator Adam Schiff, a Democrat from California, reaffirmed the ‘No Kings’ message on X, encouraging early voting and rejecting despotism. Schiff expressed commitment to the founding vision of the United States, advocating for democratic participation.

The White House addressed the coalition’s activities, with spokeswoman Lauren Bis suggesting a name change for ‘No Kings.’ Bis stated that engagement in voting demonstrated a choice between Trump’s policies and those of the Democrats.

The situation between ‘No Kings’ and Meta unfolds amidst intricate relations between the company and Trump, involving legal settlements and policy discussions. In 2025, Meta agreed to a $25 million settlement for Trump’s lawsuit over account suspensions, with a portion allocated to Trump’s future presidential library.

Early Voting in Midterm Elections

Early voting commenced in various states, including battlegrounds like Georgia, experiencing a surge to record levels. Voters opting to vote early may visit designated polling locations or utilize mail ballots, adhering to state laws. Early voting processes mirror those on Election Day.

Not all states provide early voting options, with states such as Alabama, Mississippi, and New Hampshire primarily offering absentee ballots under specific conditions.
