Pope Leo XIV appeared at the window of his study in the Apostolic Palace overlooking St. Peter’s Square for the traditional noon blessing after praying the Angelus. His appearance came a day after he returned from the hospital, where he underwent surgery to remove a lung cancer tumor. Thousands of faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square as the pope thanked them for their prayers during his hospitalization. He expressed intentions to gradually return to his usual duties. The crowd cheered as he appeared, appreciating his recovery following the announcement of a nodule on his lung that needed removal.
“Now that this delicate phase is behind me, I will gradually resume my activities, always with God’s help and your prayers,” Pope Leo declared, sounding strong despite the recent surgery. He also shared that the last week’s experience brought him closer to those dealing with illness, emphasizing his gratitude for the support he received during the difficult time. Special thanks were extended to the medical team at Gemelli Hospital who treated him. Following his address, the pope waved to the crowd before returning to his apartment.
A delegation from Africa in Rome for a congress showed their joy by dancing and ululating after the pope’s blessing. Alain Kalembu of the Democratic Republic of Congo noted, “He was always in our prayers when he was sick, and we are happy to see him today.” The pontiff, who is 71 years old, had the lower lobe of his right lung removed, marking the first major health event in his tenure. The surgery confirmed an adenocarcinoma diagnosis, a common lung cancer type. Upon leaving Gemelli Hospital, Pope Leo told reporters he was doing “much better,” following a shorter hospital stay than initially expected.
Cosimo Mastrocinque, a retired factory worker from Puglia, expressed disbelief at the pope’s swift recovery, referring to it as a miracle. American tourists, including Marla Marsala from Michigan, were relieved to pray with Pope Leo in person rather than praying for his health during his hospitalization. Marsala explained, “I am just happy that we are praying with him today instead of for him, like we were before.” She commented on the tough week it had been for those who love him, highlighting his strength and resilience.
Claire Holland from Florida felt “very blessed” to witness the pope returning to his duties. Observing his rapid recovery, she noted the countless prayers offered for him and praised the pope’s strength and determination. Despite his recent surgery, Pope Leo plans a significant trip including visits to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru from November 6 to 17. His surgeon, Dr. Stefano Margaritora, confirmed no clinical reasons for the trip’s cancellation, noting the pope’s commitment to recovery and expected full recuperation in about ten days.
Further tests are underway to determine if additional treatment is needed. Options being considered include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy based on genetic analysis of the tumor.
