Character actors like John Turturro leave a significant impact in both movies and television. With a career spanning over 46 years, Turturro consistently captivates audiences. Often regarded as one of the greats in character acting, he humbly accepts the recognition, expressing doubt about his stature.
Turturro’s filmography is impressive, featuring standout performances in films such as ‘Do the Right Thing’ with Spike Lee, ‘Barton Fink’, ‘Quiz Show’, ‘Severance’ with Christopher Walken, ‘The Big Lebowski’, and ‘Miller’s Crossing’. At the age of 69, he continues to perform some of his best work. Currently, he stars in Apple TV’s ‘Severance’ and plays a leading role in ‘The Only Living Pickpocket in New York’, a crime thriller film where he portrays a thief struggling with a changing world.
Turturro comments on the film, highlighting its human and tender elements, intertwined with a love story and a character confronting obsolescence. He finds the film evocative and moving, asking how one survives in a rapidly shifting environment.
In an interview conducted in his Brooklyn neighborhood, Turturro shared his New York roots and his upbringing in a dynamic household. Raised in Hollis, Queens in a theatrical environment, his family’s love for movies deeply influenced him. He recalls watching classics from the 1930s to the 1950s, which shaped his understanding of acting.
His aspiration to act crystallized while watching Dustin Hoffman in ‘Midnight Cowboy’. Further inspired by seeing Bob Fosse’s ‘Pippin’ on Broadway, Turturro’s determination led him to a scholarship at the Yale School of Drama after completing college. His first movie role came in ‘Raging Bull’, featuring a non-speaking part where he interacted with Robert de Niro.
Throughout his career, Turturro worked with notable figures such as Paul Newman in ‘The Color of Money’ and Robert Redford in ‘Quiz Show’. Always eager to explore character depth, he partnered with the Coen Brothers for ‘Miller’s Crossing’, where a childhood memory influenced his performance in a harrowing scene.
His collaborations with Spike Lee are noteworthy, beginning with ‘Do the Right Thing’. Lee allowed Turturro to choose his role, and he selected Pino, a complex character, stating his focus on holding the audience’s attention without diluting the character’s essence.
‘The Big Lebowski’ also stands out in Turturro’s career. Despite its brief role, his performance left a memorable impression. Initially embarrassed upon viewing his scenes, he found joy in their execution, likening it to a project among friends.
Turturro enjoys discussing acting, attributing his passion as innate. While he has yet to receive an Oscar nomination, anticipation surrounds his role in ‘The Only Living Pickpocket in New York’. Yet, for Turturro, the true achievement is found in meaningful work and audience connection.
When asked about measuring success beyond awards, he emphasized his fulfillment in captivating and affecting audiences, valuing his current career stage as fruitful and rewarding.
The film ‘The Only Living Pickpocket in New York’ hits theaters on October 23.
