Frank Garofalo spent much of the season watching from St. Rita’s bench. The junior infielder had a tough start when opportunities came early in the spring. Yet, he remained prepared and confident. A late injury to teammate Braden Quinn presented another opening.
“I always knew I could compete, but opportunities were limited,” Garofalo said. “When I did get chances, I didn’t capitalize. After ‘BQ’ got hurt, I played well.”
His confidence paid off with one of St. Rita’s most crucial hits. In a Class 3A state semifinal against East Peoria, Garofalo hit a walk-off single to left field in the seventh inning. This drove in JJ Quinlan for the winning run, giving the Mustangs a 2-1 victory at Slammers Stadium in Joliet.
Sully Kazee contributed to the win by throwing a three-hitter with three strikeouts and yielding just one earned run. Colin Quinn, set to join Heartland, went 2-for-3. Julio Gutierrez added an RBI with a sacrifice fly, scoring Jayden Hawkins.
With Garofalo’s game-winning hit, St. Rita advanced to the state championship game. The Mustangs aim to capture their first state title at 1 p.m. Saturday against Troy Triad, who won 2-0 over Crystal Lake South.
Coach John Nee, a St. Rita alumnus with 29 years of experience, emphasized the importance of the opportunity.
“Winning would mean everything to our community and past players and coaches,” Nee remarked. “Tradition never graduates. This game is for our entire community.”
Garofalo, an unexpected hero, had only four RBIs before Friday’s semifinal. East Peoria’s R.J. Duncheon tied the game 1-1 with a homer in the sixth, setting the stage for Garofalo’s decisive moment.
In the seventh, Jayden Ibarra doubled but was out at third on Quinlan’s bunt. Quinlan advanced to second during the rundown. Garofalo then hit the winning single, allowing Quinlan to score and start the team’s celebration.
“I received a fastball and seized the moment,” Garofalo said. “I’ve never hit a walk-off before. Emotionally, it was overwhelming.”
Previously, Garofalo also contributed in sectional and supersectional wins over Marian Catholic and Nazareth, respectively.
“Injuries created opportunities,” Nee explained. “Frank stepped up, both offensively and defensively. His contributions have been pivotal for three consecutive games.”
Teammate Kazee shared in the excitement of avoiding extra innings.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Kazee said. “Someone had to make that play, and when the ball went through, I knew we had the game.”
Garofalo expressed his long-standing passion for baseball and relished the high-pressure moment.
“I’ve loved baseball since T-ball,” Garofalo said. “Thriving in pressure situations feels incredible.”
