Amy Christophers, 39, experienced a shocking revelation at Duchy Hospital in Cornwall, England. She was preparing for a planned surgery related to digestive issues when a routine hospital test revealed she was pregnant.
Before her hospital visit, Christophers had taken a home pregnancy test as a precaution. It showed a negative result, and she focused on the upcoming procedure. “In my mind it was simply a case of ticking that box, confirming everything was fine and getting on with packing my hospital bag,” she shared with Newsweek.
Upon arrival at the hospital, Christophers went through standard procedures. She met with her surgeon and signed consent forms. A nurse later provided a surgical gown and explained steps before the operation. During pre-anesthetic checks, she had to provide a urine sample for a pregnancy test. “Hospital tests are far more sensitive than home tests,” she noted.
Christophers did not think about the test further, focused instead on her surgery and missing New Year’s Eve. However, before her anesthetic, a nurse informed her they needed a second urine sample. The first test came back positive. “I just stared at her, and she stared back at me,” recalled Christophers. The nurse asked if it was good news. Christophers tearfully responded, “Oh my God, yes.”
As the news sank in, and holding a slip marked “positive,” Christophers could hardly believe it. She reflected on past experiences, including losing twins in 2019 and failed attempts to conceive in a previous relationship. A second test confirmed the result. The nurse congratulated her, turning disbelief into joy.
With the surgery deemed non-urgent, it was postponed until after her pregnancy and recovery. Her partner, Darren Pellow, 42, unaware of events, had been wishing her luck and planning to collect her. Christophers was discharged an hour after her expected surgery time. She first shared the news with her best friend before telling Pellow. She handed him the discharge paperwork, which indicated the surgery had been canceled due to pregnancy. “He genuinely thought it was a prank,” she said.
Now 26 weeks pregnant, Christophers embraces this new chapter. “It was a completely euphoric, almost out-of-body experience,” she expressed. “I’ve been given another chance.”
