Major League Baseball (MLB) has issued a warning to players about writing on their uniforms following an incident involving San Francisco Giants players. Last week, during a game against the Chicago Cubs, Giants starter Landen Roupp, along with relievers JT Brubaker and Ryan Walker, wrote Bible verses on their Pride Night caps. Roupp’s cap included the verse ‘Gen 9:12-16’ which partially covered the rainbow SF logo worn for Pride Night.
MLB emphasized that such alterations to the uniform are against league rules. According to MLB’s Uniform Regulations, players are prohibited from writing or displaying any messages on their apparel or playing equipment. This policy is not new, and similar warnings have been given in the past for messages unrelated to religious expression, such as ‘Dad’ or ‘Happy Mother’s Day, I Love Mom.’
The MLB statement clarified that the warning was a standard procedure and not a disciplinary action. The league has a history of supporting LGBTQ+ fans with Pride Nights, aligning with Pride Month in June. Events typically feature rainbow-themed uniforms and invite community figures and performers to the ballpark.
Roupp expressed his beliefs regarding his choice of inscription and appreciated the freedom to express personal beliefs. However, adherence to the uniform guidelines remains a priority for the league. Giants manager Tony Vitello noted that there had been no prior discussion with the players about their cap alterations, suggesting that players generally understand they have certain freedoms.
