Achraf Hakimi to Stand Trial in Rape Case, French Court Confirms
A French appeals court confirmed that Achraf Hakimi, a player for Paris Saint-Germain and Morocco, will face a trial related to a rape case. The decision came on the eve of Morocco’s World Cup Group C match against Scotland, following a 1-1 draw with Brazil. Hakimi, who denies any wrongdoing, had initially faced rape charges in March 2023 after a woman accused him of assault at his Paris suburb residence.
The Versailles appeals court explained that its decision was based on investigations showing substantial evidence against Hakimi. Rachel-Flore Pardo, representing the accuser, expressed satisfaction with the court’s ruling after prolonged legal procedures. She emphasized the relief and hope her client feels, believing the trial could impact sexual violence perceptions, particularly in men’s football.
Relief that she has been heard by the justice system and will have her case heard at trial,Pardo said in a statement.Hope that this trial will help other women and further weaken the fortress of denial and impunity surrounding sexual violence, including within the world of men’s football.
Hakimi responded publicly, claiming his fame influenced the case’s continuation and expressing eagerness for the trial to clear his name. He conveyed the personal toll the case has taken, stressing his trust in the justice system.
Hakimi noted, “Justice looked me in the eye and told me: ‘If you were not famous, there would never have been a case,’” suggesting his celebrity status exacerbated the situation. He expressed a desire to finally address the allegations in court.
Fanny Colin, Hakimi’s lawyer, commented on the defenses’ dissatisfaction with the court’s decision. She mentioned various exonerating elements that were allegedly ignored, hinting at inconsistencies in the accuser’s statements and perceived obstruction in uncovering the truth.
The date for Hakimi’s trial is yet to be disclosed.
