Yesterday brought a mixed outcome with a 1-1 record on the diamond. While the win with the Twins was straightforward, the loss with the Red Sox was frustrating. Despite excellent pitching from Trey Yesavage, the Red Sox tied the game but ultimately lost late. Shifting focus to the AL Central, a surprising leader has emerged.
American League Central Standings
The Chicago White Sox are leading the division, defying preseason expectations. They hold a 39-34 record, providing South Side fans with a rare chance to celebrate. While it is unexpected, it’s premature to assume playoff success. The White Sox might seek trades to boost their roster, but achieving the top spot remains uncertain.
Today, the White Sox rely on Erick Fedde as their starter. Fedde’s performance has been modest this season. He’s registered a 2-5 record with a 4.50 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP. Fedde’s road statistics are troubling, with a 6.18 ERA in five starts. However, he secured a solid win against the Tigers in late May, conceding two earned runs in four innings.
Detroit Tigers in the Spotlight
The Tigers draw attention today with Tarik Skubal as their starting pitcher. Skubal is set for a lucrative offseason, yet trade rumors loom. He remarked yesterday that, without improvements, multiple players, including himself, might be traded before the deadline. Despite consecutive postseason appearances, the Tigers are currently struggling, sitting 14 games below .500 and 27 games under since last August.
Interest in acquiring Skubal remains high, but his health is a concern. This marks his second start following an injury. In his recent outing against the Guardians, he allowed five hits and three runs over 4.2 innings. Although he hasn’t faced the White Sox this season, historically they have a .209 average against him, with Randal Grichuk notably going 4-for-11.
Whenever Skubal pitches, betting lines favor the Tigers. However, this comes with a premium price. The value may lie with the White Sox, as Skubal continues to regain his form. Still, I won’t place my bets there either. A potential option is Tigers -1.5 at -105.
Game Prediction
I’m leaning towards the under 8 runs for this game. Skubal may not be at his sharpest, but should he perform well, the White Sox might struggle to score. The Tigers average four runs per game, which aligns closely with the White Sox’s recent defensive performance. Given the Tigers’ trend of low-scoring affairs, and doubts about their offense against Fedde, expecting a high-scoring game seems unlikely.
