A tense disagreement between President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni became public following the recent G7 summit. This development reveals worsening relations between the two leaders, who once shared a close political alliance on the international stage.
Meloni rejected Trump’s claims that she “begged” him for a photo during the G7 meeting. She expressed amazement at the U.S. president’s behavior and lamented his approach towards allies, describing Trump’s statements as ‘completely made up.’
Trump claimed in an interview with an Italian outlet that Meloni was eager to have a photo with him, suggesting he obliged out of pity. “She wanted a picture with me so badly. I wouldn’t have taken it, but I felt sorry for her,” Trump said to the La7 TV channel.
In response, Meloni criticized Trump for showing more leniency towards adversaries than allies. “There is one thing he should remember: neither I nor Italy ever beg,” she said.
Representatives from Meloni’s office declined to comment further. The White House has not yet responded to these developments.
Tensions had been growing as Meloni distanced herself from the U.S., pressured by domestic and political factors regarding the Middle East conflict. Italian Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani canceled his U.S. visit following Trump’s remarks, stating they were offensive to both Meloni and all of Italy.
Tajani would have attended the Italy-U.S. Business, Investment, Science, and Innovation Forum in Miami. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is slated to speak at the event, having recently visited Italy to ease tensions between the countries.
Amid these diplomatic strains, Trump has advocated for a more assertive global stance on Iran, contrasting with Meloni’s decision to stay neutral. She has not supported reducing U.S. military presence in Italy, differing from Trump’s strategies in Europe.
Italy remains a crucial part of the U.S. defense setup in Europe, with approximately 13,000 American troops stationed there by the end of 2025.
