Overview of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Renovations
In April, President Donald Trump announced a project to renew the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. He mentioned hiring a contractor to coat its massive granite basin, projecting costs of $1.5 million. During a Cabinet meeting, he criticized previous administrations for allegedly spending “hundreds of millions” on repairs. However, federal records indicate a different financial picture.
Previous Renovations
Former President Barack Obama oversaw a significant renovation of the pool, but the expenses were below Trump’s estimates. The Obama administration’s efforts in 2012 involved a two-year project costing at least $34 million. This work addressed issues such as stagnant water and leaks due to the pool settling into land originally dredged from the Potomac River. The renovation installed a new circulation and filtration system using water from the Tidal Basin, intended to conserve city drinking water.
The pool was also made shallower and its bottom tinted gray to enhance the reflection of the Washington Monument.
Trump’s Claims vs. Records
Trump’s announced budget for current repairs stood at $1.5 million to $2 million, yet federal records reveal that contracts awarded have already exceeded $14.8 million. Trump’s renovation plans included coating the pool with an “industrial grade pool” surface in “American flag blue,” covering the existing granite surface due to leakage issues.
Trump stated during a Cabinet meeting that cleaning efforts had removed “more than 10 dumpsters of garbage.”
Recent Developments
The National Park Service, under the direction of Chuck Sams during most of the Biden administration, refrained from further comprehensive rehabilitation due to an estimation exceeding $100 million. During Biden’s term, the pool was cleaned annually to manage algae growth instead.
Current Renovation Efforts
Trump commented on efforts to refurbish the pool, involving intensive steam-cleaning, sandblasting, and applying a sophisticated rubber form to prevent leaks. The project aimed to meet timeline demands, likely leading to higher costs indicated by federal records.
An email from White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers suggested that Trump’s project is more cost-effective compared to previous administrations’ attempts.
