Anthony Kay remains steadfast in his confidence despite a rocky start to the baseball season. The Chicago White Sox starter stated, “I’m here to do a job and they know I’m capable of doing it.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining confidence and accumulating positive results through consistent effort.
Kay highlighted the necessity of making changes to improve his performance. Over his last five starts, the left-hander boasts a 3-0 record with a 1.98 ERA, a .227 opponents’ average, and 24 strikeouts. Kay is set to pitch against the Detroit Tigers at Rate Field on Saturday.
Manager Will Venable acknowledged Kay’s progress, stating, “He’s made his adjustments.” After spending two years in Japan, Kay returned to adapt his pitching style successfully. Venable elaborated on Kay’s journey, noting that adjustments and hard work led to improved results.
Overall, Kay’s season statistics include a 4-1 record with a 3.96 ERA, 39 strikeouts, and 23 walks over 52 1/3 innings. While he initially struggled with a 6.12 ERA in his first six outings, Kay’s recent performance has shown significant improvement, allowing only six earned runs in 27 innings.
Kay attributes his improved performance to strategic conversations with pitching coach Zach Bove. These discussions centered on early pitch counts and improving pitch sequencing for better counts like 0-1 and 1-2. Kay remarked that understanding these elements proved crucial for his development.
Having played for the Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs, and New York Mets before joining the Yokohama BayStars in Japan, Kay signed a two-year deal with the Sox. He reflected on his journey, stating, “There was some doubt if I could do it in the big leagues.” However, his recent achievements reaffirm his capability as a skilled pitcher.
In addition to his on-field success, Kay relishes fostering camaraderie with his teammates. He enjoys engaging in light-hearted banter, often playfully challenging fellow starters about their performances to keep the team atmosphere positive and motivated.
Jordan Leasure’s Injury Update
Reliever Jordan Leasure has been placed on the 15-day injured list following a right flexor strain. Leasure explained that he felt discomfort during warm-ups on Thursday, which persisted into the game against the Minnesota Twins.
“I always try to push myself. I’m the last guy that would want to say something and pull myself out … but …something didn’t feel right,” Leasure noted.
Sadly, Leasure’s season has been challenging, recording a 6.27 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 18 2/3 innings across 18 appearances. Leasure was previously optioned to Triple-A Charlotte but returned shortly before the injury.
Manager Venable confirmed the flexor strain diagnosis and outlined an expected recovery period of eight to ten weeks. The Sox hope this will give Leasure time to recuperate and strengthen before reintegrating into the team.
In response to Leasure’s injury, the Sox recalled reliever Tyler Gilbert from Charlotte, ensuring the bullpen remains robust during Leasure’s recovery.
