The Oakland Athletics, now located in West Sacramento, are transitioning to a new stadium on The Strip in Las Vegas. To engage the local fanbase, the team scheduled six games at Las Vegas Ballpark, typically home to the Las Vegas Aviators, a Triple-A team linked to the Texas Rangers. Nestled in Summerlin, this stadium sits at over 3,000 feet, just beneath the nearby mountains.
During Monday night’s game against the Brewers, the elevated location led to an extraordinary result. Despite the park’s larger dimensions, the game ended with a 15-14 score in 12 innings. This score has occurred only 18 times in MLB history since 1900 and just twice since 2000.
The game saw the Brewers and A’s hit a combined total of 11 homers. The A’s players Tyler Soderstrom and Nick Kurtz each hit two home runs. The teams amassed 31 hits and utilized 14 pitchers to throw an impressive 441 pitches.
Unusual home runs marked the game. Brewers catcher William Contreras hit a 463-foot home run, the second longest of the year. In a rare feat, A’s catcher Jonah Heim hit a game-tying home run described as a routine pop-up, which would be an out in any other MLB park, according to Statcast.
The forthcoming move to Las Vegas demands adjustments for the A’s and MLB. The new stadium on The Strip, lower at 2,300 feet, will still favor high-scoring games. Although the roof might moderate the effects, fans and players should expect excitement when the A’s settle into their new home in 2028. With the ballpark’s design similar to Las Vegas Ballpark, games could remain slugfests.
While the roof might offer relief from the Las Vegas heat, A’s pitchers might face tough challenges, making their hitters valuable in fantasy baseball.
