During a ceremonial event marking the opening of the Obama Presidential Center, former President Joe Biden found himself in an unusual situation. As the proceedings ended, video footage captured Biden adjusting his sunglasses and glancing into the crowd as other dignitaries departed the stage. At one point, Biden audibly asked, “where’s my granddaughter?” Sources present indicated he was searching for his granddaughter, seated in the audience.
The ceremony, held at Chicago’s John Lewis Plaza, gathered an array of prominent figures, including former Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush, along with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former Vice President Kamala Harris. The event celebrated the legacy of Obama, the 44th President of the United States, who made history as the first African American to hold the office from 2009 to 2017.
This episode occurs amid renewed examination of Biden’s health and his decision to pursue a second term in office. Recently, Hillary Clinton commented on Biden’s reelection bid at New York’s 92nd Street Y, describing it as a “terrible mistake.” She suggested that a competitive primary could have better positioned Democrats for the upcoming election. Clinton voiced the belief that any Democratic contender might have successfully contested against Donald Trump.
Despite considerable pressure to withdraw following a challenging debate performance against Trump, Biden persisted in his campaign. Jill Biden, the former first lady, expressed concerns in a recent publication, voicing that her husband might have been experiencing a stroke at the time. She also hinted that he should have reconsidered his decision to run for reelection.
Biden’s public image has faced additional tests due to ongoing legal issues involving the Justice Department. These pertain to the release of audio from conversations with former Special Counsel Robert Hur, part of an investigation into Biden’s handling of classified materials. In these recordings, Hur characterized Biden as “a well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory,” which has fueled ongoing debates about his mental acuity.
At 83, Biden contends with Stage 4 prostate cancer spread to his bones. This ongoing health battle adds another layer to the discussions about his capacity to assume the presidency again.
