Burlington Central’s Reece Beemer Adjusts to a Run-Heavy Approach
Reece Beemer, the junior quarterback for Burlington Central, stands out for his passing talents, despite his team’s emphasis on the ground game. Measuring 6-foot-3 and weighing 180 pounds, Beemer adapts his play to align with the Rockets’ strategy. He trusts his running backs and linemen, ensuring efficient execution of passing plays when the opportunity arises.
“I know we’re a run-heavy team,” Beemer remarked. “I just have to do my job… Whenever we have a pass called, I know what needs to be done.”
His strategy paid off recently, as he completed 6 of 7 passes for 105 yards during Burlington Central’s decisive 41-10 victory over Rockford East in the Class 6A opening-round playoff. This included a notable 49-yard touchdown pass to Wagner Viebrock.
Burlington Central Dominates Rockford East
The Rockets, finishing the game with a 7-3 record, showcased a powerful run game led by Parker Auxier, who covered 116 yards and scored two touchdowns across five carries. Paco Acevedo, Ben Atieh, and RJ Perez contributed additional touchdowns, ensuring a smooth victory against Rockford East.
Auxier made an impact with an 80-yard touchdown run on the game’s opening play. Beemer capitalized on the second drive, completing four out of four passes for 72 yards, including the screen pass touchdown to Viebrock.
Coach Brian Iossi praised Beemer’s performance, highlighting his ability to fit into a run-dominant playbook and exceed expectations with reliable yardage and touchdown contributions.
“I’m super proud of him,” Iossi noted. “Around 115 yards and a couple touchdowns a game is what we shoot for, and that’s what he’s done.”
Growth and Leadership Development
Among his teammates, Sam Ames recognized Beemer’s growth throughout the season.
“He’s shown a great command of the huddle,” Ames said. “There’s been a ton of growth. You can see the arm talent on some of those throws.”
The quarterback position has been stable since Iossi took over Burlington Central’s program five years ago, previously led by Jackson Alcorn and Landon Arnold. This season, Beemer competed with Ashton Binz for the starting role and excelled during summer tryouts.
Coach Iossi acknowledged the healthy competition between Beemer and Binz, emphasizing the continuous drive it instills in both juniors.
Beemer responded confidently, appreciating Binz’s strong challenge, seeing it as essential for maintaining performance.
Future Prospects and Experience
The experience from a playoff win offers invaluable preparation for Beemer and his teammates heading into next year. Hoping to advance further, Burlington Central gears up for the upcoming match against Lake Zurich.
Beemer reflected on lessons learned from previous seasons, especially when playing under Arnold. His enhanced composure contributes positively to his leadership role now.
“It taught me a bunch, how to keep my head clear,” Beemer said, attributing his comfort to past experiences.
As Burlington Central moves forward, Beemer continues to evolve, demonstrating growth on and off the field, backed by his team’s strong support system.
