Cruise Rerouted from Bahamas to Canada Due to Weather
A cruise initially set for a sunny journey to the Bahamas faced an unexpected twist, redirecting passengers to colder waters in Canada. Over 5,000 passengers boarded the Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas in New Jersey on October 18, anticipating a seven-day vacation to Florida and the Bahamas. Predictions of severe weather along the East Coast led the cruise line to modify its course, steering the ship north to Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The vessel stayed in Halifax for approximately 24 hours, allowing passengers to explore, shop, and enjoy harbor rides. The ship departed Halifax on Wednesday evening with plans to return to New Jersey on Sunday after spending three days at sea.
“Immense disappointment” resonated among passengers due to the abrupt itinerary change announced the evening before the ship’s departure.
Marie Durning, a New Jersey resident, expressed her dismay, “My husband said to me, ‘This is a joke, right?'” She noted being unprepared for the sudden climate change, having remembered her winter hat and earmuffs but forgotten a scarf. Daytime temperatures in Halifax ranged from the upper 40s to low 50s Fahrenheit, with nighttime temperatures dropping into the 30s.
Not all passengers were disgruntled. Jim Matthews from near Paterson, New Jersey, shared a more positive outlook: “I’m grateful and I’m going to make the best of it.” He discovered Halifax to be a charming city. In contrast, Nicholas Meli, who traveled seven hours from Toronto, expressed his preference for the original Bahamas destination.
Commenters in a Reddit thread showed empathy for the passengers while praising Halifax’s appeal. Although some appreciated the city’s beauty, they acknowledged the disappointment of missing a warmer beach vacation.
Royal Caribbean compensated passengers with a 50% travel voucher and reimbursed any pre-booked shore excursions. As detailed on the company’s website, weather and other factors can necessitate changes to the planned itinerary, yet do not automatically require fare refunds or additional compensation.
