As MLB teams approach the summer and the trade deadline looms, the situation for last-place teams in each division is becoming clear. Teams might look to trade some of their best players to rebuild for the future. Here’s a look at the current state of these teams and the likelihood of them trading key players.
Boston Red Sox: Aroldis Chapman (95%)
Aroldis Chapman may be the Red Sox’s best-performing player this season. Despite the slim chances of trading future stars like Garret Crotchet or Roman Anthony, Chapman might be traded unless the team’s fortunes rapidly change. While the Athletics received a significant return for Mason Miller last year, Chapman’s age might lower his trade value. However, securing blue-chip prospects remains possible.
Detroit Tigers: Tarik Skubal (99%)
The Tigers’ situation is dire unless they show significant improvement by early summer. If they remain stagnant, trading Tarik Skubal, the back-to-back Cy Young winner, seems inevitable. He is up for a lucrative contract this offseason, and the Tigers appear reluctant to pay top dollar. Drawing lessons from the Angels’ past decision not to trade Shohei Ohtani, the Tigers face a similar dilemma.
Los Angeles Angels: Mike Trout (40%)
The Angels continue to struggle, and the possibility of Mike Trout being traded lingers, albeit with a low probability due to his no-trade clause. Trout’s affinity for Southern California complicates the situation, making it difficult to foresee him leaving, despite the team’s struggles.
New York Mets: Freddy Peralta (80%)
While there’s no chance of trading Juan Soto, Freddy Peralta might be on the move. He is one of the few effective players on the Mets, and with his big contract extension due, a trade seems likely unless Mets’ management changes their stance on retaining pitchers.
Pittsburgh Pirates: Paul Skenes (1%)
In the AL Central, despite the Pirates being the lowest-ranked team, they remain in playoff contention. The probability of Paul Skenes leaving is minimal, barring unforeseen circumstances akin to the Luka Doncic scenario in the NBA.
Colorado Rockies: Hunter Goodman (20%)
Hunter Goodman stands out as one of the Rockies’ notable talents. While not a superstar, his presence is a positive aspect of the team. The Rockies are unlikely to receive an attractive enough offer to part with Goodman, who is expected to be integral to their future plans.
