In Colombia, conservative political newcomer Abelardo de la Espriella held a narrow lead in the presidential runoff. The race, characterized by sharp political divisions, faces challenges from the ruling party’s progressive contender. De la Espriella, a businessman and lawyer with endorsement from former U.S. President Donald Trump, received 49.7% of the votes. Progressive candidate Iván Cepeda, aligned with outgoing President Gustavo Petro, garnered 48.7% according to near-complete election results.
Official declarations of a winner are pending, but de la Espriella’s potential victory suggests significant policy changes. These include reversing Petro’s controversial plan for parallel peace talks with illegal armed groups. Cepeda had committed to continuing this strategy along with other social reforms if he won.
“I will govern for all Colombians,” de la Espriella said to his supporters. He struck a conciliatory tone before warning, “Make no mistake, Mr. Cepeda. You already know how fiercely the tiger roars.”
In response, Cepeda and his team labeled the vote count “unofficial and non-binding,” intending to challenge results from over 30,000 voting stations. He emphasized, “We will not allow democracy to be violated.” Historically, Colombian recounted results have not overturned presidential outcomes. The winner will start a four-year term on August 7.
Protests erupted in Cali shortly after the results, with demonstrators in a Cepeda-favoring municipality damaging public property and clashing with police. Authorities noted injuries and arrests during these protests.
De la Espriella’s campaign centered on crime-fighting, including ending dialogue attempts with multiple armed groups. His plans involve adopting policies like those of Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, who lowered crime rates but faced human rights criticism. A dual U.S. and Colombian citizen, de la Espriella supports Trump and the Republican Party. Trump celebrated his likely victory online.
Voter Yolanda Hernández explained her shift from Petro to de la Espriella, citing unmet promises and rising costs under Petro’s tenure. She stated, “We want change in Colombia because it’s always the same violence, always the same thing.”
Expert Will Freeman commented on the results, pointing out they indicate no decisive shift against Petro’s vision or strong support for de la Espriella’s methods. He highlighted that regional differences play a critical role in this political polarization.
Colombia’s illegal armed groups comprise over 27,000 members. Violence remains a pressing issue, with authorities reporting 14,780 homicides last year, the highest since at least 2015, influenced by conflicts among these groups.
Amidst these events, the importance of a free press and civic engagement is emphasized for maintaining democracy.
