WNBA fans have faced criticism for their behavior towards women’s sports activists at Game 1 of the WNBA Finals at Chase Center in San Francisco. Among those targeted was Jennifer Sey, a former gymnast and the founder and CEO of XX-XY Athletics, who experienced significant harassment while attending the event with friends.
The incident began when Sey and her companions wore T-shirts with ‘XX-XY’ printed on the front. According to Sey, the atmosphere started amicably, but tensions rose during the game. A woman seated across the aisle grew increasingly aggressive, pointing and filming them.
Sey explained, “There was a woman across the aisle, who was pointing at us aggressively, giving us the finger. She was clearly filming us. She thought we were doing wrong by wearing a [XX-XY] shirt and assumed she could get us kicked out.”
This situation escalated when a fan holding a “Trans Lives Matter” sign notified security, causing Sey and her group to be approached. Sey shared a video online showing the confrontational exchanges and the subsequent interaction with security, who told them their shirts were considered antagonistic despite not violating the Fan Code of Conduct.
Earlier in the season, fans wearing similar shirts faced issues. Incidents included threats of ejection and verbal attacks at multiple games, highlighting a recurring tension around the topic.
During the game, as Sey and her friends were escorted to talk with security, they faced significant verbal abuse from other fans in the stands. This included profane remarks and even threats.
In response to the backlash, Sey recounted that security offered an escort out for safety. They were verbally attacked again, with some fans expressing hostility towards their presence.
“The security guard seemed kind of confounded,” Sey noted. “He told us, ‘You’re instigating or we’re being told you’re instigating because of the shirts.'”
Further complicating the situation, comments by WNBA players like Gabby Williams support a more inclusive approach, emphasizing the importance of competing with trans athletes.
Overall, the incident at the WNBA Finals reflects broader tensions regarding trans inclusion in sports. The WNBA has stressed being an inclusive environment, although critics argue that certain fans experience mistreatment based on their views.
Former ESPN host Elle Duncan criticized those drawing attention to this friction, labeling their concerns as unfounded. She suggests that the real issue lies in current fandom dynamics, which some perceive as increasingly intolerant.
