The 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially begun, jointly hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico. With 48 teams competing, only one match has been completed so far. The Mexican National Team secured a 2-0 victory over South Africa at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. With 103 matches remaining, the tournament will travel to various spectacular venues.
However, some left-wing sports media columnists have expressed concerns about the event. Specifically, they claim the United States has already lost, in their opinion. USA Today columnist Nancy Armour argues that despite any potential success by the U.S. Men’s National Team, the country has shown itself to be “hateful and greedy.”
“The U.S. men’s national team might achieve significant success,” she writes. “But this won’t change the perception of America as a nation that exploits the love of the game for profit.”
Armour criticizes the image of Americans as “ugly” hosts and highlights former President Donald Trump as a contributing factor. She considers the treatment of the Iranian National Team and the denied entry of Somali referee Omar Artan as significant failures in hospitality. Artan was allegedly linked with terrorist groups, which Armour describes as “dubious reasons.”
Armour also mentions high ticket prices as another concern but acknowledges that FIFA, not the U.S. government, sets prices. These prices have been criticized for being unaffordable for many fans. Trump remarked on securing the right people’s entry into the country, which Armour criticized.
Furthermore, Armour’s disapproval extends beyond these incidents, noting her criticism of Qatar’s human rights record during the 2022 World Cup. She also quoted New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, an opponent of Trump’s policies, adding fuel to the debate.
Despite the criticism, supporters maintain that the U.S. will be a successful World Cup host, attributing accusations to political bias. They argue that the tournament has the potential to showcase the best aspects of the United States as a host nation.
