The recent renovations to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, backed by President Donald Trump, sparked controversy. The project, which has reached a multimillion-dollar figure, became a topic of debate on CNN’s “Table for Five.” Panelists argued about whether this investment in the nation’s capital was justified or a misplacement of priorities.
Host Abby Phillips critiqued the $13 million spent so far on repairing the Reflecting Pool. Other renovations in Washington, D.C., like the East Wing of the White House and the regilding of statues around the Lincoln Memorial, were also discussed. During renovation work in Washington on May 29, 2026, a blue protective coating was applied to the Reflecting Pool.
“Is it just monopoly money to the president at this point? We’ve seen budget cuts affecting federal employees, yet spending here seems unchecked,” Phillips questioned.
Lydia Moynihan, a New York Post columnist, defended the project, emphasizing the importance of beautifying and securing Washington. She compared Trump’s initiative to former President Barack Obama’s $35 million restructuring effort.
“Compared to the proposed trillions by Democrats, these are minor expenditures. Trump is implementing valuable policies not discussed in this show,” Moynihan asserted.
The discussion shifted to the federal government’s financial priorities. Journalist TourĂ© criticized the spending, citing Trump’s stance on childcare funding, rising gas prices, and the cost of the war with Iran.
“In a struggling economy, why focus on these projects?” TourĂ© questioned.
Moynihan countered, questioning whether infrastructure repairs should be abandoned due to high costs.
“Should we ignore necessary repairs like our roads just because they are expensive?” she asked.
The heated discussion continued until Phillips regained control, focusing on Trump’s priorities and the public’s perception.
Former Michigan Rep. Peter Meijer supported the beautification efforts, highlighting the significance of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.
“It’s important to ensure D.C. remains safe, healthy, and attractive,” Meijer stated.
Journalist John Avlon pointed out the incomplete nature of the renovations, referencing the unfinished East Wing.
Max Bacall, an Associate Editor for the Flash/Media/Culture team at Fox News Digital, provided insights into the ongoing debates.
