Dr. Vanessa Kerry has been appointed the special envoy for health resilience at the World Health Organization (WHO). Her role involves ensuring preparedness in global health systems, emphasizing strong systems, effective primary care, and responsive capabilities.
Kerry’s extensive background in health advocacy includes serving as WHO’s inaugural special envoy for climate change and health. She is the director of global health and climate policy at Harvard School of Public Health and the founder and CEO of Seed Global Health.
“We’ve been funding disease by disease and crisis by crisis. We can be thinking about this differently.” – Dr. Vanessa Kerry
Seed Global Health focuses on building health resilience in countries with limited resources by deploying mentors to train local healthcare professionals and enhance infrastructure. Kerry’s early experiences shaped her activism, including a life-changing trip to Vietnam and a challenging delivery in Rwanda.
During a crisis in Rwanda, Kerry found herself aiding a high-risk childbirth with a Rwandan nurse. Despite the lack of imaging and specific training, they successfully delivered the baby. This experience led her to realize the need for sustainable healthcare systems, prompting the founding of Seed Global Health.
Seed Global Health collaborated with the Peace Corps from 2012 to 2018 in countries like Uganda, focusing on HIV/AIDS control. In Uganda, Kerry’s team built emergency medicine capacity, enabling trained physicians to respond effectively to an Ebola outbreak earlier this year.
Kerry’s philosophy is simple: train health workers to monitor, provide healthcare, conduct surveillance, and prevent diseases. Building resilience means establishing systems before emergencies hit. She highlights the importance of listening to local voices, aligning with national priorities, and securing adequate funding.
