Kona, known for its premium coffee, faces a severe water crisis after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake disrupted the region’s water catchment systems. Thousands of residents on Hawaii’s Big Island rely on rainwater collected in tanks due to the absence of county water infrastructure. Many of these tanks burst during the quake, emptying precious water supplies.
Roy Santana, 80, whose catchment tank was destroyed, embodies the plight faced by numerous farmers. The quake not only shattered tanks but also demolished infrastructure like rock walls, vital for protecting farms. KayLynne Santana, 71, described her experience amidst falling debris and the inspection of their damaged water system. “It was chaotic,” she stated, explaining the tremor’s impact on their farm’s water tank and rock walls.
The agricultural community in Kona, reliant on collected rainwater, now grapples with limited resources. The earthquake has added pressure to an already challenging year marked by destructive weather events. These natural disasters emphasize the need for resilient infrastructure and emergency preparedness, particularly in isolated regions.
Kona’s farmers, accustomed to managing their water carefully, now face the daunting task of recovering from this disaster. The event highlights the importance of sustainable water solutions and support for communities vulnerable to natural disruptions.
