Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that Nidal Hasan, the Fort Hood shooter, will face execution in December. Hasan, once an Army psychiatrist, was convicted for the 2009 shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, which resulted in 13 deaths and over 30 injuries.
President Donald Trump has authorized Hasan’s execution by firing squad, set for December 3 at Fort Hood. This aligns with the military’s death penalty process, marking the first U.S. military execution since 1961 and the first by firing squad since World War II.
The attack occurred during the height of the global ‘War on Terrorism.’ Investigators concluded Hasan’s actions were driven by Islamic extremist beliefs. His email interactions with Anwar al-Awlaki, a cleric linked to al-Qaeda who later praised Hasan’s actions, supported this conclusion, alongside Hasan’s own statements during his court-martial, where he claimed to act in defense of the Taliban.
Hegseth’s comments came while traveling through Ohio and Wisconsin on his Arsenal of Freedom tour. Hegseth previously advocated for livestreaming the execution, but President Trump, after initially considering it, opted against it. Trump cited a desire to respect those who may not wish to witness the event visually.
Trump acknowledged that despite Hasan being labeled a ‘very bad and evil man,’ his execution will proceed without streaming. Family members of Hasan’s victims can choose to attend. Trump’s decision followed criticism from various sources, including the victim’s families and political figures across both parties.
Hegseth emphasized that the method serves as a deterrent to similar future actions, aligning with Trump’s decision. Despite bipartisan opposition, the scheduled execution will allow family members to observe if they wish, but will not be broadcasted.
Hegseth’s Arsenal of Freedom Tour
In January, Hegseth launched the Arsenal of Freedom tour, promoting the defense industrial base. On Tuesday, the tour included the workforce in Dayton, Ohio, and Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Hegseth visited Riverside Machine & Engineering in Wisconsin, a supplier for defense and aerospace industries, and Ohio’s Sierra Nevada Corporation’s Aviation Innovation and Technology Center.
