By October 24, 2026, a suspect was detained in Germany following a fire at Adolf Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest, a mountain retreat. German police reported the incident occurred at the Kehlsteinhaus, the mountain residence on Obersalzberg. The alarm was raised around 9:15 p.m. local time on Friday.
Upper Bavaria South police released a statement saying the building was engulfed in flames upon the arrival of the firefighters. No people were found inside, and there have been no reported injuries.
Authorities mentioned challenges in accessing the burning site due to difficult local conditions. Despite these obstacles, emergency services responded promptly to the situation.
A webcam still captured after the fire showed the aftermath at Kehlsteinhaus in Bavaria. Shortly after the fire was reported, authorities focused on a suspect, leading to a criminal investigation and one person being taken into custody. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Eagle’s Nest, situated at 6,017 feet, was completed in 1938. Hitler used it occasionally as a temporary seat of government during his rule. The site avoided Allied bombing in World War II, keeping much of its original architecture intact.
Today, the Eagle’s Nest is both a tourist attraction and a functioning restaurant and beer garden. It is described on its website as one of the few undamaged Nazi-era monuments, serving as a reminder of the regime’s madness.
