Fisherman Escapes Shark Encounter in California Waters
A California fisherman had a harrowing experience when his kayak was struck by a suspected shark about a mile offshore. The incident occurred near Leffingwell Landing in Cambria around 9:30 a.m. According to the Cambria Fire Department, the impact capsized the vessel, causing substantial damage and forcing the fisherman into the water.
Despite the shock, the fisherman managed to climb back onto his kayak and started paddling toward the shore. However, punctures in the hull led to the kayak filling with water, compelling him to swim to safety. Fortunately, he reached the shore without injuries, and fire officials responded by launching a rescue boat to salvage the damaged kayak, retrieve his fishing gear, and recover personal belongings.
Dr. Chris Lowe from California State University, Long Beach’s Shark Lab examined photos of the kayak’s damage. He indicated the likelihood of the incident involving a shark strike but noted that definitive confirmation was still pending. Previous encounters have been recorded in the area. In May 2012, a similar incident occurred, throwing a fisherman into the water when his kayak was hit near Leffingwell Landing. The fisherman escaped without injuries.
Again, in 2019, David Zamora experienced a shark encounter. He reported a great white shark biting his kayak about two miles offshore from Leffingwell Landing. Zamora was thrown into the water but managed to climb back aboard his vessel before a nearby boater rescued him.
State records show that since 1950, California has documented 233 shark incidents, with 36 of these involving kayaking or canoeing. These records include cases where sharks make contact with kayaks, surfboards, or other equipment, regardless of injury.
Wildlife officials explain that some encounters might involve exploratory bites, as sharks investigate unfamiliar objects such as kayaks. This behavior doesn’t necessarily mean a shark intends to prey on a person.
Following this latest encounter, the Cambria Fire Department advised those using the ocean to exercise heightened caution, remain vigilant, and avoid entering waters when there’s visible shark activity. In emergencies, individuals are urged to call 911 for immediate assistance.
