Macklemore has intensified his political activism by launching the Free Palestine tour. This follows his controversial removal from Ed Sheeran’s lineup. During a concert in Dublin, Macklemore expressed his solidarity with the Palestinian people, declaring, “We will continue to fight for collective liberation until our last breath,” as reported by Reuters.
Referring to his previous statement, “Free Palestine,” made during an opening act for Ed Sheeran, Macklemore said, “Two words are all that it took.” He commented on the reactions these words provoked, saying they appear more controversial than the suffering they represent.
Those two words are so threatening to some people that we’d rather silence those two words than confront what they actually mean.
Macklemore’s remarks have sparked varied reactions online. While some praise his bold activism, others question his motives and suggest he should address issues closer to home. One user on social media remarked, “Imagine going to this and getting lectured by a person who is out of touch.” Another suggested that Macklemore should focus on local issues such as homelessness in Los Angeles.
Despite this criticism, others have supported Macklemore’s stance. Praise included calling the rapper “stunning and brave,” with one user saying, “Thank goodness for the humanity and courage of artists like this. Free Palestine.”
Following his removal from Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour, Macklemore began his own Free Palestine tour. His removal stemmed from his statements made during an opening performance at MetLife Stadium. Ed Sheeran clarified that Macklemore’s departure was decided by concert promoters and venues, not by him personally. Sheeran characterized the Israel-Palestine conflict as “a human tragedy,” expressing dismay over the situation.
Macklemore also alleged that Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, influenced other stadium owners to oppose his performances. The Free Palestine Tour is set to continue in Paris and London, with U.S. dates expected to be announced soon.
