Shifting Dynamics in Georgia’s Republican Runoff
The Republican gubernatorial runoff in Georgia is becoming increasingly competitive. Recent polling shows businessman Rick Jackson gaining ground on Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones. This shift is notable as Jones entered the race with an endorsement from President Donald Trump, positioning him initially as the front-runner.
In the initial primary, Jones led with approximately 39 percent of the vote, while Jackson followed with 33 percent. This result pushed them into a runoff. However, a Cygnal polling memo reveals Jackson has surpassed Jones, changing the dynamics of the runoff.
Polling Trends and Predictions
A first-choice ballot on May 28 had Jones leading Jackson with 41 percent to 38 percent. By June 7, Jackson had increased his support to 46 percent, while Jones dropped to 35 percent. The memo highlights, “Jones has everything moving against him,” pointing to a change from a 0-point difference to a 12-point lead for Jackson when undecided voters were accounted for. The overall shift is a 14-point swing towards Jackson.
On the combined ballot, Jackson now leads with 56 percent compared to Jones’ 44 percent. Yet, contrasting surveys present varied views. A CivicLens Research poll showed Jones with a 10-point lead over Jackson. This survey included 700 likely GOP runoff voters between May 29 and June 1, with a margin of error of 4 percentage points. Conversely, a JMC Enterprises poll found Jackson leading by 2 points, reflecting varying voter sentiments.
Prediction markets such as Kalshi and Polymarket still show favorable odds for Jones, standing at 58 and 61 percent, respectively.
Georgia’s Political Landscape
Despite supporting Trump in 2024, Georgia is a fiercely contested battleground. Democrats hold the state’s U.S. Senate seats, while Republicans manage the governor’s office. Following the runoff, the Republican nominee will challenge former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms in the general election.
President Trump’s endorsement remains influential in Republican races. His support has been crucial in several primaries, affecting the outcomes for candidates like Representative Thomas Massie and Senators Bill Cassidy and John Cornyn. This highlights the complex dynamics within Georgia’s Republican Party, where alignment with Trump is significant, but independent stances on issues have also emerged.
