A federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., has decided not to issue an indictment against Cassidy Hutchinson, a former aide to the Trump White House. This decision follows the Justice Department’s attempt to pursue criminal charges related to statements Hutchinson made to Congress in 2022.
According to two sources, the Justice Department aimed to indict Hutchinson for allegedly providing false statements to the House committee that investigated the events of the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. However, their efforts were unsuccessful as of Tuesday. What remains uncertain is whether federal prosecutors will try again to secure an indictment.
Cassidy Hutchinson, a former aide to White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, testified on June 28, 2022, before the House committee on the January 6 events.
Hutchinson, who was a top aide to Mark Meadows, has become one of the key witnesses for the House select committee investigating the Capitol riot and former President Trump’s challenges to the 2020 election results. During a live televised hearing in June 2022, Hutchinson described Trump’s behavior on January 6, sharing details she claimed to have heard from another White House official about the president’s response after being informed he could not travel to the Capitol. However, aspects of her account, specifically concerning an alleged confrontation inside the presidential vehicle, were disputed by others familiar with the event.
Fox News Digital previously disclosed that a federal grand jury in Washington had considered evidence relating to possible false statements Hutchinson made before Congress. At that time, a source indicated that further evidence could be presented soon, with no final decision made regarding potential charges.
The New York Post also noted that the Justice Department was looking into Hutchinson’s statements to Congress for possible inaccuracies.
The decision by the grand jury not to indict Hutchinson does not necessarily determine the truthfulness of her congressional testimony. Hutchinson has consistently maintained her stance on the testimony she delivered.
