Israel has taken a significant step by designating Route 60 as the ‘Biblical Highway.’ This route, tracing Israel’s central mountain ridge, connects Nazareth in the north with Beersheba in the south. The highway passes through historically and religiously important sites, bringing a new dimension to travel in the region.
The initiative aims to provide a Route 66-style experience for Bible enthusiasts and tourists. The historical significance of the Biblical Highway is immense, with roots stretching over 4,000 years. The route begins in Beersheba, where Abraham is believed to have established an oasis.
According to David Parsons from the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem, understanding the Bible can serve as a safeguard against antisemitism. He highlights that thorough examination of archaeological evidence in Israel showcases the Bible as a factual and inspirational resource for global values.
Among the many significant stops along this route is Hebron, home to the Cave of the Patriarchs. This site has historical connections to Abraham and King David. Bethlehem, another key location, is known as the birthplace of Jesus and the backdrop for the Book of Ruth.
Moving through Jerusalem, travelers find Mount Moriah and sites significant to both the First and Second Temples. The journey continues north to Bet El, where Jacob experienced a prophetic dream, and then to Shiloh, a spiritual center for Israelites for nearly 400 years.
The Biblical Highway further extends to Shechem, Mount Tabor, and Megiddo, ending in Nazareth. These locations echo profound biblical stories, like those of Joseph and Deborah, adding depth for visitors seeking to connect with their religious heritage.
Yishai Fleisher, representing the Jewish community of Hebron, expresses enthusiasm for the project. He argues that the Biblical Highway holds educational, heritage, and tourism importance. Israel’s government embraces this initiative as a reflection of its biblical identity and a commitment to preserving its historical roots.
Fleisher points to efforts by the Palestinian Authority to challenge Jewish historical claims over sacred sites, viewing the ‘Biblical Highway’ as reinforcing Israel’s ancient identity.
Ze’ev Orenstein from the City of David highlights how the highway offers an immersive experience into biblical history, inviting visitors to engage with the Bible beyond written text, exploring the geography and its enduring relevance.
Parsons comments on a similar initiative in Jordan with the King’s Highway, framing Israel’s undertaking as an acknowledgment of historical truth. The project will feature visitor centers, observation points, and multilingual signage to enhance the experience.
