Incumbent Senator Jon Ossoff, a Democrat from Georgia, has consistently dismissed the idea of launching a 2028 presidential campaign. He reaffirmed his intent during a recent Georgia U.S. Senate debate.
During the Atlanta Press Club U.S. Senate debate, held at the Georgia Public Broadcasting studios, Greg Bluestein, chief political reporter for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, addressed Ossoff on the matter. Bluestein remarked, “Senator Ossoff, you’ve repeatedly said you won’t run for president in 2028, but your name continues to surface as a potential contender. So will you pledge right now tonight to serve your full six-year term if you win?”
Ossoff responded directly, stating, “Yes, I will. I have zero interest in running for president. I’m not running for president. I’m running for re-election to the Senate.”
The debate, part of the Peach State contest, sees Ossoff facing Representative Mike Collins, a Republican congressman serving in the U.S. House since 2023. Collins countered during the debate, suggesting Ossoff “is running for president” and called him a potential “DSA candidate,” referencing the Democratic Socialists of America.
Ossoff, who has been a U.S Senator since early 2021, has received endorsements from former President Barack Obama. On the other hand, Collins is backed by former President Donald Trump.
Georgia’s political landscape features a Republican governor alongside two Democratic senators. In recent presidential elections, the state supported Trump in both the 2016 and 2024 elections and Joe Biden in 2020.
