Kawhi Leonard’s Potential Trade: A New Twist
The ongoing story of Kawhi Leonard’s trade possibilities has taken an intriguing turn. With Leonard approaching the last year of his contract with the Los Angeles Clippers, speculation has grown about a potential move. Should the Clippers fail to secure him under a contract extension, many believe he might be on the trade block.
Recently, the Golden State Warriors, Detroit Pistons, and San Antonio Spurs were mentioned as interested parties in acquiring the two-time Finals MVP. However, developments took a different direction last Sunday. Reports indicated that the Clippers engaged in serious trade discussions with the Toronto Raptors over the weekend. Leonard, who led Toronto to an NBA championship in 2019, once expressed openness to extending his contract with the Raptors, suggesting a possible return to Toronto.
Adding to the mix is Masai Ujiri, the man who orchestrated Leonard’s original trade to Toronto in 2018. Currently serving as the president of basketball operations for the Dallas Mavericks, Ujiri is reportedly interested in bringing Leonard to Dallas. There, Leonard could team up with Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving, forming a strong core. According to reports from The Athletic, there have been talks about a trade package involving P.J. Washington and Klay Thompson, along with draft picks, heading to Los Angeles.
To recall, Ujiri made waves in 2018, facilitating one of the most significant trades in NBA history. He traded Raptors star DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poeltl, and a future first-round pick, which became Keldon Johnson, to the San Antonio Spurs for Leonard and Danny Green. Although Leonard had an expiring contract then, and many expected his departure after one season, the outcome was extraordinary. Toronto achieved 58 wins, secured the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, and claimed their first NBA championship against Golden State. Leonard’s playoff performance was impressive, with averages of 30.5 points, 9.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.7 steals across 24 games, culminating in his Finals MVP award.
Ujiri now seeks a similar path but in Dallas. With Leonard, Flagg, and a healthy Irving, along with role players like Max Christie, Naji Marshall, Dereck Lively, Daniel Gafford, and rookie Morez Johnson, the Mavericks might position themselves as strong contenders in the Western Conference. Given reports that Leonard’s long-term extension preferences are with Toronto and San Antonio, similar to 2018, Ujiri might face a one-year rental situation. Yet, the success of his previous gamble indicates potential rewards.
