New York (AP) — The last time the New York Knicks lost a game, they didn’t lose again for a month and a half. After trailing Atlanta in the first round of the NBA playoffs, desperation turned into dominance. The Knicks won 13 consecutive games, many decisively, marking one of the most impressive postseason runs in NBA history.
At present, no dramatic measures are needed. With a 2-1 lead over the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals, a 2-2 split in the remaining games would earn New York its first championship since 1973. Thus, following the loss in Game 3, the Knicks don’t require an overhaul. However, improvement is essential.
“We have a veteran group. Nobody is, quote-unquote, panicking or anything. Everyone is disappointed we didn’t execute and play at our standard. That’s not taking anything away from San Antonio, but we believe we can perform much better,” Knicks coach Mike Brown stated on Tuesday. “We’re eager to prove it on the court.”
Game 4 is slated for Wednesday, in a series where the visitor has won all three games; this is only the second occurrence in NBA Finals history. The Spurs dominated early and secured a 115-111 victory on Monday. Victor Wembanyama led with 32 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and three blocks. He showed composure in a hostile Madison Square Garden, similar to winning Game 7 against Oklahoma City in the Western Conference Finals.
Despite beginning 0-2 at home, the Spurs remain confident, buoyed by a talented roster centered around one of the best players. Confidence was evident even after the home losses, believing they could still clinch the title.
“I didn’t want us to get too happy from one win and ease off before the next game. But since the end of Game 2, we’ve been confident about winning this series,” said guard Stephon Castle, who scored 23 points.
The Knicks’ first loss since April 23 didn’t prompt a scramble for solutions. They continuously seek improvement, even during wins. “In every game, regardless of the situation, we’re growing as a team. I think we’re learning and getting better — obviously before last night. No matter what, we’re sticking together. We’ll execute, be better. That’s our mindset moving forward,” Jalen Brunson remarked.
There are areas to address. Karl-Anthony Towns isn’t scoring in the final periods. Wembanyama has exploited weaknesses in the last game and a half. The Knicks need to reduce turnovers and defend without fouling, irrespective of Brown’s thoughts on officiating in Game 3.
New York executed well enough to achieve the second-longest winning streak in postseason history. Now, they must quickly rebound from a defeat or head to San Antonio for Game 5 with a tied series. “We have, what?, 13 straight games, 50 days of footage showing our best level. We have solid material. We’re returning to our fundamentals, what makes us great, and will get back to work,” Towns added.
