Cause of the Fire
Lineage Logistics, the tenant-operating firm for the affected warehouse, has indicated that the fire originated during the testing of a solar array on the building’s roof by third-party contractors.
Implications of the State of Emergency
The state of emergency declaration enables the city’s emergency response framework. This includes directing various departments to evaluate damages and costs. It seeks state aid for firefighting, cleanup, environmental monitoring, and community recovery processes. As of Saturday, the state had not yet declared an emergency.
Challenges in Extinguishing the Fire
The fire started on Wednesday and continues to burn four days on. This warehouse covers 500,000 square feet, storing 85 million pounds of frozen food. According to Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Jamie Moore, the building’s corrugated steel walls contain dense foam that burns slowly, releasing gases despite consistent helicopter water drops.
LAFD Chief Deputy Jon O’Brien noted that buried pockets of smoldering fire remain beneath structural wreckage and solar panels. The building’s vast size and the location of the flames necessitate innovative firefighting strategies, employing helicopters and heavy equipment.
Air Quality and Health Concerns
Moore advised individuals with lung conditions or smoke sensitivity to avoid spending extended periods outdoors but mentioned that hazardous materials have been somewhat controlled at the location. Concerns persist regarding the biohazards posed by spoiled food.
L.A. County Health Officer Muntu Davis reported smoke and fine particles as the primary health concerns, which can irritate the ears, nose, throat, and lungs, worsening heart and lung disorders. Sensitive individuals should wear N95 and P100 masks and sign up for emergency alerts at alertla.org.
Battery Risks
There is concern about lithium-ion batteries inside the building. These batteries are often linked with solar energy storage. Officials have not confirmed their presence but have mentioned that 60 forklifts are equipped with lithium-ion batteries. Fortunately, 56 forklifts were moved from potential fire hazard areas in a risk-laden operation led by LAFD Battalion Chief Nicholas Ferrari.
