Soccer fans experienced contrasting emotions in The Hague, Netherlands, and Casablanca, Morocco, as the Netherlands exited the World Cup following a penalty shootout against Morocco. The Dutch team faced its earliest elimination in World Cup history, leading to celebrations and clashes.
The Hague Clashes
In The Hague, where a significant Moroccan community resides, tensions flared. Police reported heavy fireworks use in Schilderswijk district, where officers encountered fireworks and stone throwing. Riot squads intervened with a water cannon to disperse the crowd. Several individuals were arrested for ‘open violence’.
Casablanca Celebrations
In Casablanca, Morocco’s largest city, fans erupted in jubilation after Ismael Saibari’s decisive penalty sent Morocco to the Round of 16. As the penalty shootout climaxed, fans watching in a popular coffee shop transitioned from tense silence to euphoric celebration. Fireworks lit up the sky and car horns blared as festivities continued into early morning hours.
Despite the late night, dedicated fans gathered on a main boulevard after midnight, dancing and waving Moroccan flags while chanting, “Canada, we’re coming for you.” Morocco will face co-host Canada next, with supporters hopeful for another memorable World Cup run. The Atlas Lions aim to replicate their historic achievement from 2022, reaching the semifinals as the first African team to do so.
