Neal McDonough recently shared a difficult period in his life, revealing personal and career struggles. In an interview with Fox News Digital, the 60-year-old actor openly discussed his involvement in the Jimmy Stewart biopic “Jimmy” and recalled a time when his Hollywood career felt over.
McDonough recounted being labeled as a ‘religious nut bag’ after refusing to kiss a female co-star due to his deep love for his wife. This decision led to him being blacklisted. He said, “What time is the bar open? That was generally my thought process back then.” His refusal had severe consequences, resulting in unemployment and financial troubles. According to McDonough, “I lost the house, lost the cars, lost everything.”
During these trying times, McDonough found support from his friend, the late actor Luke Perry. Perry’s kindness extended to offering McDonough and his family a place to live. Despite the release of “Justified” during this period, McDonough battled feelings of inadequacy, believing he had failed his family.
“She grabbed me and says, it’s us or the bottle, you choose,”
With introspection and the firm support of his wife, Ruve, McDonough chose a path of sobriety and devotion to his family. His wife’s ultimatum became the turning point, prompting him to stop drinking and focus on serving a higher purpose.
Reflecting on this transformation, McDonough praised his wife, saying, “It’s just a cold, hard fact that God gave me an amazing, incredible woman.” Together, they have built a successful partnership, producing several films such as “Boon,” “The Warrant: Breaker’s Law,” “Homestead,” and “The Last Rodeo.”
McDonough met Ruve in 2000 while filming “Band of Brothers,” and the couple married in December 2003. They are parents to five children.
Discussing his current project, “Jimmy,” McDonough expressed a deepened appreciation for Jimmy Stewart, particularly as this year marked Stewart’s 118th birthday. McDonough resonates with Stewart’s post-World War II life, appreciating Stewart’s struggles and achievements. His involvement in the biopic is both a personal and professional triumph.
In a notable mention, McDonough admired KJ Apa’s portrayal of Jimmy Stewart, calling himself “one lucky and blessed dude” for being part of the project.
