The New York Knicks continued their impressive winning streak in the NBA Finals, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 105-95 in Game 1 on Wednesday night. Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 30 points, while Karl-Anthony Towns contributed 18 points and 12 rebounds. The Knicks overcame a 14-point deficit in the second half to secure the victory.
OG Anunoby added 17 points for the Knicks, who have now won 12 consecutive playoff games. This achievement places them as the seventh team in NBA history to accomplish such a streak. Additionally, the Knicks made history by being the first team to defeat San Antonio in a Game 1 of the finals series, as the Spurs were previously 6-0 in similar scenarios.
Victor Wembanyama of the Spurs scored 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, though he struggled with his shooting, hitting only six of 21 attempts in his finals debut. Teammates Stephon Castle managed 17 points, and both Julian Champagnie and Dylan Harper each contributed 16 points.
Game 2 will take place in San Antonio on Friday. Notably, former Spurs coach Gregg Popovich attended the game from a suite, maintaining his presence at every Spurs finals match. Spurs legends such as David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Bruce Bowen were also present.
The match attracted several New York Knicks legends and high-profile fans, including Patrick Ewing, Spike Lee, Tracy Morgan, Ben Stiller, Fat Joe, and Timothée Chalamet. Dedicated Knicks fans traveled in droves, including Tommy Sherlock from Brooklyn, who noted that attending Game 1 in San Antonio was more affordable than watching a game in New York.
The Knicks started strong, leading 14-7, though the Spurs responded with a 20-13 run to take a 10-point lead. Several lead changes marked the second quarter, with San Antonio ahead 55-48 at halftime. San Antonio extended their lead to 14 in the third quarter before the Knicks mounted a comeback, tying the game 76-76 by the end of the period.
New York took an eight-point lead partway through the fourth quarter. Wembanyama’s free throws put the Spurs ahead 95-94, but Brunson’s three-pointer soon after regained the lead for the Knicks, which they maintained until the end.
Historically, the Spurs have evaded trailing in finals through various close calls, including ties with New Jersey in 2003, Detroit in 2005, and Miami in 2013, although they eventually lost that series. This Game 1 loss marks the first occasion where they trailed during the finals series.
