Nick Reiner, son of Rob and Michele Reiner, is petitioning for access to his $1.5 million trust fund. He aims to use the funds to support his legal defense against charges in the murder of his parents. His attorneys filed a petition in Los Angeles court claiming he was supposed to start receiving the trust two years ago.
The petition alleges Nick has been denied access despite clear instructions from his parents regarding the fund’s distribution. His attorneys insist that the trust’s legal aspects are separate from the criminal case, saying, “Like anyone accused of a crime, Nick is presumed innocent, and he is entitled to mount his defense with the resources that are lawfully his own.” The trust, established in 1993, was part of the Reiners’ estate plan, separate from the larger family assets. Nick’s siblings, Jake and Romy, have not commented on the case.
Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty to charges of double homicide. His parents, renowned director Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead in their home. Nick was arrested soon after.
According to the petition, Nick should have received half of his trust fund at age 30 and the rest at 35. However, the trustee has not released the funds, causing financial strain on Nick’s defense. “Given the present circumstances, it is an abuse of the Trustee’s discretion to refuse those requests,” the petition stated, emphasizing Nick’s immediate need to fund his legal defense and personal needs while incarcerated.
Initially represented by attorney Alan Jackson, Nick now relies on a public defender due to financial constraints. Jackson has expressed willingness to return if funds become available. The petition highlights Nick’s ongoing need to challenge the charges effectively.
The petition also mentions changes in Nick Reiner’s schizophrenia medication prior to the incident. The case is progressing slowly.
