Pope Leo XIV expressed appreciation for the countless prayers he received from believers as he appeared at St. Peter’s Square on Sunday morning. The event marked his gradual return to duties after undergoing surgery for a malignant tumor removal.
Drawing cheers from the gathered crowd, the pope stood at the window overlooking the square. At the same occasion last week, during the traditional Angelus blessing, he disclosed the detection of a nodule in his lung set for surgical removal. He confirmed plans to resume his tasks progressively.
“Now that this delicate phase is behind me, I will gradually resume my activities, always with God’s help and your prayers,” Leo said, exhibiting a strong voice after four days since surgery.
He acknowledged the support he felt and extended specific thanks to the staff at Gemelli Hospital for their care and professionalism.
Demonstrating their happiness and relief, a delegation from Africa who were in Rome for a conference celebrated with dance after his appearance. Alain Kalembu from Congo expressed his joy, emphasizing the pope’s presence in their prayers during his illness.
The 71-year-old pontiff underwent major surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, revealing adenocarcinoma, the most prevalent form of lung cancer. Confidently speaking to reporters as he returned to the Vatican, Pope Leo stated he felt “much better” after a shorter-than-anticipated hospital stay, discharged on Saturday.
“I don’t believe it, because he was just operated on the other day,” remarked Cosimo Mastrocinque, a visitor from Puglia, calling the pope’s recovery “a miracle.”
Americans visiting the Vatican, particularly eager to connect with the first American-born pope, expressed relief. Marla Marsala from Michigan had plans to attend Mass last week canceled due to his hospitalization. The public’s sentiment was hopeful, fueled by belief in the pope’s resilience.
Claire Holland from Jacksonville shared excitement at the pope’s quick recovery, affirming the millions of prayers for his health.
Looking ahead, Pope Leo has a busy schedule, including a trip to South America covering extensive travel and high-altitude destinations. Dr. Stefano Margaritora assured there are no clinical concerns preventing the planned journeys. His remarks to Vatican News highlighted the pope’s dedication toward recuperation, with expectations of full recovery shortly.
Further testing of the tumor continues. Results, including genetic profiles, will guide doctors in determining additional treatment needs. Potential therapies considered are chemotherapy, combined chemotherapy and immunotherapy, or targeted oral therapy.
