Recent Shooting Incident Near White House Raises Security Concerns
Madeleine Rivera reports live from Washington, D.C. on a recent shooting incident near the White House, where law enforcement engaged with an armed individual. Retired Secret Service agent Jeff James offers his analysis during a segment on ‘Fox & Friends Weekend.’
The shootout on Saturday highlighted rising concerns about security threats and incidents involving President Donald Trump and senior administration members. These events raise worries about increasing political violence. The most recent episode involves Nasire Best, 21, from Maryland, who approached a Secret Service checkpoint near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW around 6 p.m. He reportedly removed a weapon from his bag and opened fire on Secret Service officers.
According to the Secret Service, Best, armed with a revolver, was shot and killed after exchanging gunfire with agents near the White House. A senior administration official disclosed that Best had previous encounters with the Secret Service and had shown mental health challenges. He allegedly fired three shots toward the executive mansion before being incapacitated by Secret Service agents.
This incident follows closely after another armed suspect, Cole Allen, 31, from Torrance, California, attempted to enter the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at Washington Hilton with multiple weapons. Investigators stated that Allen, who had shared anti-Trump sentiments and hostility towards Christians online, aimed to target high-ranking Trump officials attending the event.
Allen’s plot was uncovered during law enforcement efforts outside the Washington Hilton. This occurred less than two years after President Trump survived two assassination attempts during the 2024 campaign. These attempts have significantly influenced security strategies concerning the president and senior officials. In one incident, a gunman opened fire during a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, which resulted in injuries and one fatality before the suspect was stopped by Secret Service agents.
Another incident involved an individual with a rifle near Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. This attempt was thwarted before any harm could occur. Such events highlight the ongoing focus on bolstering security around Trump and related figures.
In February, another suspect, Austin Tucker Martin, 21, from North Carolina, was fatally shot attempting unauthorized entry at Mar-a-Lago while Trump was in Washington. Officials emphasize a broader increase in threats toward Trump and former officials, spurred by extremist rhetoric and radicalization efforts.
Security concerns extend beyond Trump, with increasing swatting incidents, threats, and enhanced protections for judges, prosecutors, and public officials involved in politically sensitive cases. Law enforcement and the intelligence community remain vigilant in the face of rising political violence risks, intensified by the upcoming election cycle.
