Rory McIlroy emerged as a staunch critic of LIV Golf when the league first appeared in 2021 and launched its inaugural event in June 2022. Over time, his perspective evolved as LIV Golf’s future became uncertain, eventually softening his stance.
Initially, McIlroy’s critical view held firm. Yet, as the years progressed and at the age of 37, he reevaluated his position. The shift seemed driven by a broader perspective, possibly influenced by his personal milestones like achieving a career grand slam.
His recent comments during the Bloomberg New Economy Forum confirmed this shift. He openly discussed LIV Golf’s flaws and observed how the league, despite its significant resources, executed its ideas poorly. McIlroy emphasized that LIV Golf could have strategically allocated its capital and collaborated with golfing bodies instead of simply enriching already wealthy professionals.
“LIV had probably like half of a good idea that was executed pretty poorly,” McIlroy stated in New Delhi.
The bankruptcy filing by LIV Golf following the withdrawal of financial support from the Saudi Public Investment Fund highlighted the league’s struggles. McIlroy reflected thoughtfully on LIV Golf’s initial stages, sharing insights into what might have been improved.
As the Saudi fund ceased backing LIV Golf, McIlroy expressed openness to the return of LIV players to the PGA Tour. In May, he remarked that their reintegration would benefit the business aspects of the tours.
When asked if he would welcome these players back, McIlroy affirmed positively, highlighting the mutual advantages for all involved stakeholders.
