On Sunday, the wife and two children of Argentine soccer star Lucas Trejo were confirmed dead following devastating earthquakes in Venezuela. Trejo plays for Club Sport Maritimo La Guaira, a second-division team in Venezuela. The earthquakes struck with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, causing widespread destruction.
Trejo’s family, his wife Yanina, and children Aaron and Ainhoa, were found under the rubble after three days of searching. Trejo had been participating in a team training camp in Caracas when the disaster struck. He immediately returned home to La Guaira, the hardest-hit area, to find the building in ruins.
“Club Sport Maritimo La Guaira deeply mourns the irreparable loss of our player’s wife and children. Peace to their souls and comfort for Lucas and all his loved ones,” the team expressed in posts on Instagram and other platforms.
Venezuelan authorities reported that around 1,500 people have died from the disaster, and tens of thousands are missing. U.S. and local search and rescue teams have been working tirelessly to locate survivors. A mother and her 9-month-old baby were rescued from a collapsed building in Venezuela by a U.S. search team. The baby’s rescue was shared in a video by the U.S. State Department, capturing the emotional moment.
Many Venezuelans expressed concerns over the limited visibility of state rescue teams in severely affected areas, though acting President Delcy Rodríguez assured that the government was executing a comprehensive response. Approximately 200 people have been rescued, yet databases indicate around 51,000 remain unaccounted for.
Diana Sandrano, a resident of La Guaira, shared with CBS News her determination to find her missing brother. “He deserves to live and have a future,” Sandrano stated, highlighting the ongoing struggle of those searching for their loved ones.
