President Donald Trump criticized Texas Senator John Cornyn on social media, labeling him as “VERY disloyal.” Trump expressed support for Cornyn’s opponent, Attorney General Ken Paxton, in the Senate primary runoff happening Tuesday.
“Ken’s opponent was VERY disloyal to me, as President, and didn’t fight hard enough for the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT – VOTER I.D., PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP, NO MAIL-IN BALLOTS (with exceptions for Military, Illness, Disability, or Travel!),” Trump wrote on Truth Social. He urged voters to support Paxton, stating he “WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN.” Trump praised Paxton as a “GREAT Attorney General” who remained loyal to him, accusing Democrats of failing in their opposition against him.
Trump’s endorsement of Paxton could increase his chances of nomination. The race is part of Trump’s strategy to replace politicians who oppose him with those who align with his views.
This strategy proved successful recently when Representative Thomas Massie lost to Trump-backed Ed Gallrein in Kentucky’s GOP primary. Similarly, Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy was defeated by Trump-endorsed Julia Letlow and John Fleming.
On NewsNation’s The Hill, Cornyn distanced himself from Massie and Cassidy, claiming his situation differed since he has supported many of Trump’s policies despite occasional disagreements.
Importance of the Race
The runoff election winner will challenge Democratic state Representative James Talarico in November. Talarico, combining faith-based rhetoric and progressive politics, has substantial statewide backing. Although Trump won Texas by a large margin in 2024, Talarico is a strong opponent aiming to win a Democratic seat for the first time since 1993.
Many establishment Republicans favor Cornyn, viewing Paxton’s legal controversies as a party liability. These controversies include a longstanding felony securities fraud case and corruption allegations from aides, leading to a significant state settlement. Despite a 2023 impeachment by the Republican-led Texas House, Paxton was acquitted by the state Senate. Paxton denies any wrongdoing.
Thune’s Support for Cornyn
Senate Majority Leader John Thune supported Cornyn after Trump backed Paxton. Thune stated that Trump’s endorsement decisions are independent, reaffirming his commitment to supporting Cornyn’s reelection. He commended Cornyn’s effectiveness as a “principled conservative.”
Thune acknowledged the challenging task Republicans face in defending 24 Senate seats, while Democrats have nine. He expressed confidence in the quality of Republican candidates, emphasizing the effort to maintain Senate control.
