The State Department revoked the visa of Colombian President Gustavo Petro last year after his participation in a pro-Palestinian rally in Manhattan. The president had intended to attend a New York forum led by Mayor Zohran Mamdani. However, diplomatic agreements prevented him from doing so.
Scheduled for this week, a meeting between President Petro of Colombia and Mayor Mamdani of New York was canceled. U.S. diplomats informed Colombia that proceeding with the meeting might breach the terms under which Petro was allowed to enter the country. Both Colombian and American officials confirmed this situation.
The U.S. State Department had already canceled Petro’s visa in the fall. His travel was confined to attending a United Nations Security Council meeting. According to officials, any additional activities beyond this meeting were restricted.
Colombian officials agreed to cancel the planned meeting after communication from the U.S. Embassy in Bogotá with Colombia’s foreign ministry.
Typically, foreign leaders possess visas granting free U.S. entry, but Petro’s visa was revoked following his presence at a Manhattan rally in September. There, he criticized U.S. support for Israel in the Gaza conflict, urging U.S. soldiers to ignore presidential commands.
This incident was part of several confrontational episodes between the leftist Petro and the Trump administration.
The New York City Mayor’s Office did not provide an immediate response to requests for comments.
The State Department emphasized that a visa is a privilege, not a right, in a statement. It warned that encouraging U.S. soldiers to defy orders from a legitimately elected president jeopardizes any individual’s visa.
Despite efforts by President Trump to reach an understanding, the statement noted Petro’s continued defiant conduct.
