Unexpected Friendships: Bush’s Sweet Gesture to Michelle Obama
When President George W. Bush greeted former presidents and their spouses at the funeral for his father, George H.W. Bush, an unexpected and lighthearted moment occurred. Instead of offering just a formal handshake, Bush handed former first lady Michelle Obama a piece of candy. This gesture elicited a wide smile from Obama, highlighting the unique friendship between the 43rd president and Michelle Obama.
The exchange was reminiscent of another occasion when Bush discreetly passed a cough drop to Obama during former Senator John McCain’s funeral in September. These actions signal the warmth and camaraderie between them.
Sweet Exchange: During President Bush’s funeral, George W. Bush handed Michelle Obama a piece of candy, just like he did at Senator McCain’s funeral.
In an interview on “Today” in October, Obama reflected on her bond with Bush. She noted that protocol often places them as seatmates at official functions, jokingly mentioning that Bush is her “partner in crime” at these gatherings. Due to this arrangement, they frequently find themselves in close company during national ceremonies.
The friendship between Obama and Bush has blossomed into a model of bipartisan camaraderie. They famously shared a heartfelt hug at the dedication ceremony of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in 2016. Bush noted in a 2017 People Magazine interview that their mutual sense of humor fostered their connection, saying, “She kind of likes my sense of humor. Anybody who likes my sense of humor, I immediately like.”
In a conversation with Ellen DeGeneres in 2017, Bush acknowledged that their friendship often surprises people because it exemplifies how individuals from opposing political spectrums can genuinely like each other.
During George H.W. Bush’s funeral at the National Cathedral in Washington, the Obamas shared a pew with President Trump and first lady Melania Trump, as well as former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and former President Jimmy Carter with Rosalynn Carter.
This gathering of prominent figures from different political backgrounds illustrates the possibility of good relations and friendships even in the political realm.
