The Washington Nationals have taken significant steps in response to allegations of religious discrimination against their starting pitcher, Trevor Williams. This comes after undercover footage from the O’Keefe Media Group revealed comments made by Sean Hudson, now the former Director of Community Relations, who claimed to discriminate against Williams for his Catholic faith.
On Friday, the Nationals confirmed Hudson’s dismissal. During a pregame segment of their match against the San Diego Padres, Jason Sinnarajah, President of Business Operations, addressed the situation. He stated emphatically, “we are not anti-Catholic.” The Padres eventually won the game 7-5.
Williams opposed an anti-Catholic group, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, recognized by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2023. The group is known for mocking Christian and Catholic traditions. In the undercover video, Hudson remarked that Williams voiced his religious concerns on social media, leading to the team not including him in their social media endeavors.
Sinnarajah expressed the organization’s disapproval of Hudson’s comments, stating, “We’re horrified by the comments made on the video. The comments don’t reflect us as an organization, our values, and who we are. We took action right away, and the individual is no longer employed by the team.”
Addressing the specific claim of sidelining Williams from social media content, Sinnarajah issued an apology to Williams, reaffirming his value both on and off the field, “We feel awful that he’s been dragged into this situation.” He denied organizational engagement in activities like monitoring personal search histories or suppressing player visibility on social media.
“I also want to take a minute to apologize to Trevor Williams for any distress this situation has caused him,” Sinnarajah added.
Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., has called for the Department of Justice to probe the allegations of discrimination within the Nationals and Major League Baseball.
O’Keefe Media Group commented, “We are glad to see that Nationals fans are getting the accountability many of them have called for. No one should be discriminated against because of their religion, including Trevor Williams.” They stressed that Hudson’s firing is merely the start of ensuring accountability.
The Nationals’ willingness to issue an apology contrasts with the Los Angeles Dodgers’ handling of the recognition of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, who did not offer an apology despite altering the event’s timing during the 2023 season. Williams wittingly addressed the incident on Instagram, joking about his absence from a team video discussing sandwiches.
